An Introduction to the Independent Sponsor Model

This 45-60 minute webinar will explore the emerging world of independent sponsors. Once known as "fundless" or "unfunded" sponsors, these dealmakers are carving out a niche in the M&A community. This is designed for people have not worked extensively with independent sponsors in the past, and those who would like to better understand the independent sponsor model. Topics will include:

The webinar will be presented as an "interview" conducted by a capital provider/moderator to a panel of four independent sponsors of varied sizes and investments.

Moderator Profile

Christopher Sheeren

Mr. Sheeren is responsible for sourcing and evaluating investments made by Huron, as well as the firm's overall marketing and business development activities. He has served as a Director for numerous Huron portfolio companies, including Maple Leaf Automotive, Inc. and Apex Laboratories International, Inc. (among others). His experience includes serving as a financial advisor for middle market businesses in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Prior to joining Huron in 2004, Mr. Sheeren was with Conway MacKenzie, a crisis-management and turnaround consulting firm. He gained extensive experience guiding clients through various bankruptcy and out-of-court workout situations, serving as interim CFO, controller or financial advisor. Prior to Conway, Mr. Sheeren was with PricewaterhouseCoopers as an audit manager and Revlon as a sales professional. Mr. Sheeren has a B.A. from the University of Nebraska and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, and is a CPA. Chris has four children, and is an unapologetic Nebraska football fan.

Christopher Freeburg

Christopher Freeburg has 20 years of experience in private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and executive search. His transaction experience includes investing in and advising companies in the healthcare, manufacturing, business services, technology and consumer industries. He is responsible for originating, executing and managing portfolio investments at Skyline Global Partners. Chris currently sits on the board of iMDsoft. Prior to co-founding Skyline Global Partners, Chris served as a Vice President with UIB Capital, a lower middle market private equity firm, where he was involved in sourcing, executing and managing portfolio investments. He sat on the boards of Victron and Open-Silicon while at UIB Capital. Prior to that, he served as Vice President with Healthios, a merchant banking boutique focused on the healthcare sector. Previously, Chris was an Associate at TA Associates, a leading private equity firm with $18 billion of capital under management. Before that, Chris worked in Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions with the investment bank of Robertson Stephens & Company. Chris earned his B.A. at Stanford University and his M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.


Grant Kornman 

Grant is a seasoned investment professional with years of both deal and operating experience. Over the last few years, Grant has honed his operating skills by founding several innovative companies such as MoneyToGo, HelpMeToBuy and Vuru. Grant's leadership and these companies have been profiled in numerous national media outlets including an appearance on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. Grant was also Director of Business Development at Isadra, an enterprise software company that was acquired by VerticalNet (NASDAQ: VERT).Prior to rolling up his sleeves and running companies, Grant spent years investing in operating companies and real estate. He was the Florida Development Partner for The Lane Company, one of the largest multifamily development companies in the U.S. In that role, Grant focused on acquiring and developing apartments and condos that ranged from $15 million to $50 million in project size. Grant began his career as an associate at Sterling Partners, a private equity firm with over $4 billion under management. At Sterling, Grant structured investments in numerous companies and spent considerable time advising senior management teams on their growth and capitalization strategies. Grant has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Finance from Georgetown University.

Conor Mullett

Conor Mullett is a Managing Director of Red Oak Growth Partners. and brings over 19 years of private equity experience, including leading and monetizing investments in buyouts, growth equity and venture capital. Most recently, Conor was Co-Founder and General Partner of Updata Partners, a growth equity firm with $450mm AUM where he was involved in all aspects of firm management. While at Updata, he was involved in a host of investments including serving on the Board of Directors for eSecurity (sold to Novell), Getpaid (sold to Sunguard), Netkey (sold to NCR), Jobs2Web (sold to Successfactors/SAP), iContact (sold to Vocus), Pulsepoint, Amber Road, Ordermotion (sold to Netsuite), Foresee and Pet360. Prior to Updata, Conor was in the Private Equity Group of William E. Simon & Sons, family office with over $1 billion AUM, where he sourced, closed and managed control-oriented buyouts of middle market companies. Conor also worked in the Corporate Finance Group of GE Capital which provided debt financing solutions to equity sponsors acquiring public and private companies. Conor graduated from the College of William & Mary and received his MBA from Columbia Business School.



Dan Negrea

Mr. Negrea co-founded MTN Capital Partners in 2003 and the firm began investing in 2004. Since then, MTN and its portfolio companies have been involved in acquisitions totaling almost $500 million. Before MTN, Mr. Negrea was an investment banker for 20 years. He held senior positions in leveraged finance at Drexel Burnham, Bear Stearns, Chase Securities, and ING Barings. At ING Barings, he served as head of high yield capital markets. During his career, Mr. Negrea worked with companies in almost every industry and has raised over $15 billion in capital through a variety of financial instruments including high yield bonds, senior secured notes, bank loans, mezzanine loans, and equity securities. Mr. Negrea is a director of Kings Supermarkets, Revolution Dancewear and JSI Store Fixtures. He is a former director of The Orthotic Group. Mr. Negrea has an M.B.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. in International Finance from the University of Bucharest, Romania. Mr. Negrea is a member of the Order of Malta.
